SECOND PUBLIC MEETING JUNE 11th 2009 BUILDINGS IN THE PARK

At the second meeting of the Friends of Clarence, Holmfield and Thornes Parks, held in the Holmfield Arms on 11th June, some 40 members considered the buildings and structures in the Parks.
Tim Johnson, WMDC estates officer, outlined the current state of some of the buildings and discussed their possible future uses. He asked members for their views on the purposes of and need for these structures.
The Group welcomed the recent improvements to the bandstand as a result of the efforts of the Wakefield Music Collective working with the Council and recognised that its more frequent use for concerts, brass bands and other events is of benefit to the Parks.
Members expressed their wish for refurbishment of the Aviary. They want this long-standing attraction in the Park to be available for many more years.
A number of ideas were put forward at the meeting for improvements and possible alternative uses for the shelters and some of the other buildings. These ideas will be used in preparation of a plan for the overall future of the Parks.
The next meeting of the Group, in August, will look at Safey in the Parks.
