FORTH PUBLIC MEETING OCTOBER 22nd 2009 - EVENTS IN THE PARK

At the meeting of the Friends of Clarence, Holmfield and Thornes Parks, held in the Holmfield Arms on October 22nd, the winning entries in the Group’s recent photographic competition were displayed. The winning photographs have been framed by Bevelo of George Street.

Brian Else, the Group’s Treasurer, described the main topic of the meeting - the staging of events in the Parks.

Jerry Harrington and Tim Johnson from Wakefield Council explained that the Council is very keen to encourage as wide a range of events as possible, large and small, in the Parks. We are all aware that times have changed and that Health and Safety legislation and the requirements of insurance companies make the planning and organising of events more onerous, but the Council hopes that the Friends Group can play a co-ordinating role to help potential event organisers.

Members discussed events which used to be held in the Parks and which they hoped could return and also suggested new ones.

Brian closed the meeting by telling members of our success in obtaining a grant to buy some trees which will be planted in Thornes Park on December 1st
